Minerva University, known for its innovative approach to education and focus on immersive, hands-on learning, has launched a student-focused psychology laboratory, focused on the science of music, health, and wellness. During the first eight-week summer internship in San Francisco, students are designing and conducting research on how sound and music affect people's emotional states, focus, and overall well-being.
In addition to their work at Minerva University, the current summer interns are preparing for a research project on sound perception that will take place at Dolby Laboratories' facilities during the upcoming academic year. Throughout the program, students will also engage with psychology laboratories at other universities and meet with prominent researchers.
This lab is one of a growing number of immersive research and project opportunities available to Minerva University students. Minerva recently partnered with EARTH University in Costa Rica as part of the university’s Sustainability Lab. Students also worked in Tokyo on projects in the Artificial Intelligence Lab launched in partnership with Softbank and the Masason Foundation. The Laboratory for the Science of Music, Health, and Wellness is funded by a donation from Jeralyn Glass. Her generous gift will support the lab and several student research fellowships named in honor of Glass’s late son, Dylan Sage.
“This gift from the Glass family provides Minerva students with yet another opportunity to advance their research and problem-solving skills and create positive social impact," said Minerva President Mike Magee. “Improving mental health and well-being is a global issue that requires cross-cultural understanding. The chance to contribute to knowledge in this field is exciting for our students.”
“I was drawn to the work at Minerva University because I'm excited by the open-mindedness I see in this global community of young leaders, problem-solvers, and entrepreneurs,” Jeralyn Glass said. “The students participating in the lab share my interest in improving mental health and well-being for all people of all ages through music and sound therapy by using scientific research to discover what works and why. I know the skills and experiences they gain through this laboratory will serve them well beyond their time at the University.”
The project in San Francisco will serve as the foundation for future research in cities around the world where Minerva University students live and learn as part of their undergraduate program.
