Yana, originally from Bulgaria, comes from a family that values quality education. While she did not see value in chasing perfect grades, she thrived under academic pressure, viewing it as a catalyst for constant learning and growth. Dissatisfied with conventional educational systems centered around grades and rote memorization, Yana embarked on a journey to seek a more stimulating and immersive learning environment, ultimately landing on Minerva University.
"I had been eyeing Minerva for two years before I finally applied. The idea of taking complete responsibility for my education in a demanding format was both fascinating and intimidating," Yana recalls.
Yana's experience as a Visiting Scholar proved to be one-of-a-kind. Initially, navigating online interactions with her peers felt overwhelming as it lacked an unstructured environment where they could connect outside of the classroom, which left her feeling a bit isolated. However, she soon realized that this was an opportunity in disguise. "Being a remote student allowed me to travel and experience the world while still being part of the Minerva community. I visited places like Vienna, Edinburgh, the Netherlands, Greece, Egypt, and even spent some time in Istanbul with friends," she shares. This nomadic lifestyle, combined with her studies, taught her discipline, responsibility, and the true essence of being a global citizen.
The impact of the Visiting Scholars Year (VSY) program on Yana extended beyond academics. Her travels and the responsibility of managing her studies while on the move brought about a noticeable change in her personality. "My parents saw a shift in my attitude towards learning. They saw me taking charge of my education and were reassured about my ability to travel alone," Yana mentions.
Reflecting on her time as a Visiting Scholar, Yana has some words of advice for prospective students. "Make the best out of this opportunity. Minerva's unconventional teaching methods are a breath of fresh air. And if you are concerned about feeling isolated, remember that there are numerous platforms to connect with fellow students. But also, use this time to be adventurous. Explore the world while you learn."
Yana's journey is a testament to the fact that sometimes, stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing unconventional paths can lead to the most enriching experiences. As she continues her educational journey, she remains grateful for the doors that Minerva's VSY program opened for her.
